Description

Alness Viaduct, designed by Joseph Mitchell and completed in 1862, is a long double-arched structure featuring smaller flanking arches over the roadways on either side of the river. It is constructed of coursed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The viaduct has a large square buttressed and crenellated central pier, along with a cutwater. The segmental arch rings over the river and roads are chamfered in ashlar, while the small central arch is adorned with rusticated voussoirs and a carved crest above. The structure is topped with a coped ashlar parapet.
