Cromarty Primary School, Braehead, Cromarty

Cromarty Primary School, built by Andrew Maitland and Sons between 1875 and 1876, features alterations and additions from 1890 and 1904, also by Andrew Maitland & Sons. This long Gothic single-storey building has six bays, with an advanced single bay wing on the left. To the right, there is a two-storey and attic section with a steeply pitched gable, which includes a three-stage belfry topped with a bellcast conical roof and a weather-vane. The adjoining two-storey schoolhouse has dormerheads and consists of two bays. The structure is made of red dressed rubble with polished yellowish ashlar dressings. The central bays feature bipartite and tripartite windows, with a gablet linked to a corbelled eaves course. The left gable has a single mullioned window with geometric decoration above it. The right gable originally contained a large elliptically arched entrance, which has since been blocked by a window, along with flanking doorways—one leading to the belfry and the other to the schoolhouse. The schoolhouse has two dormerheads, and there are wings to the rear with long chimney stalks. The roof is slate. The property is accessed through cruciform ashlar gate piers with ball finials, a long low coped wall with four short railing piers serving as gate piers, and iron railings.
