Luma Light Factory, 510 Shieldhall Road, Glasgow

The Luma Light Factory, designed by Cornelius Armour, the staff architect for the Scottish Cooperative Wholesale Society, was built in 1936 as a modern electric light factory. It features a large rectangular flat-roofed block with a prominent two-stage lamp testing tower situated above the main eaves, offset over a curved staircase bay that includes an iron-railed deck walk. The building was converted into housing in 1995 and 1996, with an office suite located within the tower. The exterior has rendered brickwork and large multi-paned crittal steel windows. To the left of the staircase, there are three three-storey bays that house offices, while a recessed range to the right has a similar eaves level but is expressed as two storeys. The high manufacturing hall on the first floor is illuminated by closely spaced windows at the upper level. An iron railing lines the roadside.
