Description
33-43 Stockwell Street in Glasgow is a building designed by Frank Burnet and Boston architects between 1923 and 1929. It features warehouses and shops on a large corner site, standing five stories tall with a sunken basement. The building has a nine-bay elevation facing Trongate, with a canted bay at the corner to Stockwell Street. The Stockwell Street elevation consists of 21 bays arranged in a pattern of 8-8-5, while there is a six-bay angled elevation to Osborne Street.
The ground floor is made of polished pink granite, while the rest of the walls are constructed from red polished sandstone, with channeling on the first floor. The structure has a steel frame with reinforced concrete floors and metal-framed windows, topped with a flat roof.
All elevations are similarly detailed, although the Osborne Street side is simpler. On the second, third, and fourth floors, windows are flanked by giant pilasters that support a deep cornice above the fourth floor, featuring cast-iron balconies on the fifth. The windows are metal-framed tripartites, typically with 15-pane small glazing. A parapet above the fifth floor steps up at the end bays, and the canted angle bay includes an attic storey topped with an octagonal copper dome.
The main entrance is located on Trongate (No 177) at the center of the building. This entrance bay is recessed and narrower, featuring a central granite doorway with decorative consoles that support seated statues flanking a festooned oculus. The elevation facing Osborne Street shares similar detailing but is less ornate, lacking the giant order pilasters.
