Description
137 Trongate in Glasgow is a four-storey, three-bay warehouse designed by architect James Sellars in 1885, showcasing a Free Renaissance style. The building is constructed of polished red ashlar stone, although the ground floor features a modern shopfront that detracts from its original appearance.
The first floor has banded masonry and a wide central tripartite shallow-bowed oriel, flanked by polished red granite Ionic columns. This oriel is accompanied by single lights on either side. The second floor features a central three-light canted window, with all bays bordered by pilasters and pilastered reveals. The third floor is galleried, with windows arranged in a 2-3-2 grouping, separated by engaged pillars that connect to a columned arcade.
The first-floor windows are sash and case with plate-glass glazing, while the second and third floors have two-pane casements. Each floor is topped with a cornice, with a delicate festoon frieze on the first floor. The eaves cornice is complemented by a fine wrought-iron balustrade at the parapet, with die pedestals on either side and corniced end stacks. The building is topped with slate roofs.
