Description
St Mungo's Roman Catholic Church, located at 58 Parson Street in Glasgow, was designed by George Goldie and built between 1841 and 1877. This Italianate Gothic church features a rectangular plan and is constructed from cream sandstone, which is squared and snecked, with an ashlar base, band and string courses, and dressings. The exterior showcases pointed openings.
On the southeast elevation, there is a gabled entrance bay at the center, which includes a tripartite narthex supported by red granite columns with foliate capitals. Above this, there are gabled finialled hoodmoulds that are intricately carved. The upper gable is offset and features an architraved pointed arch recessed panel, flanked by two cusped two-light windows that include quatrefoils, blind roundels, and a rose window at the apex. Additionally, there is a trefoil oculus at the top of the gable and a cross finial. To the right, an angle buttress is present, flanked by a tall single-storey bay that has a hoodmoulded pointed arch panel filled with a cusped two-light window and a decoratively carved roundel. At the southeast angle, there is a polygonal spirelet adorned with lancets on each face and a stone spire featuring carved fish-scale bands.
The tower is a squat, incomplete square structure that flanks the entrance gable to the west. It has angle buttresses and lancets beneath a stone-bracketed shallow piend roof. The side elevations include pointed arch clerestory windows with cusped two-light windows and circular oculi above. The church features square lead-pane glazing and is roofed with grey slates.
Inside, the church has an aisled nave that culminates in an apse.
