Description
St Mungo’s Church, built between 1963 and 1964 by Alan Reiach, is a single-storey church with adjoining halls situated on St Mungo's Road, Cumbernauld. The church itself is a square-plan structure with a pyramidal roof, and the halls extend to the southwest. The exterior is primarily brick faced. The church features deep, overhanging boarded timber eaves supported by steel girder columns, and a continuous horizontal band of clerestory windows is positioned below these eaves.
The main, or south-east, elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a flat-roofed porch centrally positioned, accessed by two steps leading to a pair of timber doors. This porch is flanked by three-light glazed panels, with single windows to its left and right returns. The north-east elevation is asymmetrical, with a boarded timber door reached by a ramp located slightly off-centre to the right. The north-west and south-west elevations are largely blank, with the exception of the clerestory windows. The halls adjoin the church in the centre of the south-west elevation.
The church's roof is pyramidal and made of copper, with a glazed, stepped-back apex. Above this sits a steeply-pitched pyramidal belfry, constructed on four stilts and featuring a timber underside. Generally, the windows are metal-framed.
Inside the church, the nave is brick lined, with glazed timber doors and a tiled and boarded timber floor. Timber pews are arranged at angles around a central timber pulpit, font, lectern, and communion table all set on a raised plinth. The tall pyramidal roof is lined with timber, and a timber grid at the apex incorporates rooflights and artificial lighting.
The adjoining halls are single-storey and arranged in a T-plan. The south-east elevation of the halls is asymmetrical, showcasing a glazed timber door to the right, a long glazed corridor to the left, and a kitchen and lavatory wing advanced to the left with windows to its return. A doorway, flanked by glazed panels, is stepped forward in the centre, leading to a pair of timber doors. The main hall itself is stepped up and back to the outer left, with a horizontal band of windows below the roofline. To the north-east, the halls adjoin the church. The north-west elevation is asymmetrical, with a band of windows to bays on the right, and bays on the left stepped forward with a band of windows. The south-west elevation of the halls features a continuous horizontal band of windows below the roofline. The halls generally have timber-framed windows, with flat roofs and vertical copper overhangs to all but the main hall. The interior of the halls is simple, with boarded timber ceilings, with the exception of the main hall.
A large steel crucifix stands to the south of the church.
