Description

34-40 Bentinck Street in Glasgow is a four-storey and basement tenement building, dating from around 1880 and designed in the style of James Sellars. The building features a classical design with a façade that has 15 unequal bays. The front is finished in polished ashlar, with a channelled ground floor, while the rear elevation is made of squared rubble.

The structure has alternating flat and canted full-height window bays. Each entrance, located at the top of the stairs, oversails the basement area. The entrances include alternating main doors and close entries, with the main doors featuring pilastered, architraved, and corniced doorpieces, some of which are double-leaf, panelled storm doors. The close entries are plain. Above the basement, there is a plain entablature on each floor that incorporates a moulded cill band. The windows are sash and case, with stone transoms on the third floor. The ground floor windows have moulded cills and aprons, and the flat bays have architraves.

The eaves are stepped and bracketed, projecting boldly, and there are corniced axial stacks on the slate roof. The elevation facing Bentinck Street has bays arranged in groups of three, with each group featuring outer shallow canted bays and stone mullions. The elevation facing Gray Street includes shallow, canted four-light outer bays. The building is also adorned with fluted, cast-iron rhone pipes and cast-iron boundary railings.

Inside, at No. 46 Gray Street, there is a column screen in the hall, along with good plasterwork throughout.
