Description
Belhaven-Westbourne Church, located at 52 Westbourne Gardens West in Glasgow, was designed by architect John Honeyman and completed in 1881. This Classical Renaissance church features a prominent portico with a pedimented front. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar with banded masonry that has been stone cleaned.
On the east elevation, the ground level is supported by Ionic pilasters that hold up a dentil pediment, which is interrupted by a two-storey advanced pedimented portico featuring four pairs of superimposed columns—Corinthian above Ionic. The ground level includes smooth recessed round-arched panels with bold keystones and rusticated margins, which contain square-headed corniced windows, with double-leaf panelled doors at the center. The first floor showcases arched stained glass windows with pilastered reveals. Flanking the main pediment are two small square open-arched bell-cotes topped with ogival lead roofs and iron finials.
To the southeast, there is a single-storey wing that houses halls and is detailed to match the ground margins of the main facade. The continuous dentil cornice features a die-balustrade and five-bay flanks with round-arched windows on the upper level. The north flank is finished in polished ashlar and includes an architraved, consoled, and pedimented door with cill strings. The south flank is made of droved ashlar with round-arched gallery windows.
Inside, the church has an aisleless five-bay nave with a panel-fronted gallery on three sides, supported by elaborately carved consoles and accessed by stairs in the towers. The windows are flanked by pilasters that support deep coving, and the coffered ceiling features iron beams painted and decorated with plasterwork. A shallow organ recess is flanked by Corinthian columns and pilasters, housing an organ from 1913, with a screen designed by Keppie. The interior also includes an elaborately carved timber communion table, chairs, and a pulpit with walnut inlay. Stained glass windows were created by Douglas Strachan around 1920 and by Margaret Chilton around 1951. There are also memorial tablets for war commemorations.
Memorial tablets to Dr. R. Drummond and Rev. W. R. Thomson are located near the stairs on the north and south sides. The church halls to the southeast feature a timber ceiling and roof-lights.
