29 Hyndland Road, Glasgow

23 Hyndland Road in Glasgow is an impressive building designed by architect Alexander Thomson in 1871. It features a long terrace that is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has two-bay elevations complemented by three-bay shallow advanced terminal pavilions. The exterior is made of polished ashlar stone, with banding at the ground level, and has been mostly cleaned of dirt.

Each house has steps on the left side leading down to the basement, which are flanked by two Ionic columns in antis that support a recessed tripartite doorpiece with glazed side lights and fanlights. To the right at ground level, there is a three-light window. The first floor is set back and features three-light canted oriels that are corniced and adorned with antefixae, along with single light windows. The second floor has five windows arranged in a continuous rhythm across the terrace. At the pavilions, there is a doorpiece in the inner bay, and the first-floor windows are architraved and corniced.

The building has sash windows with plate glass glazing throughout, and there is a cill course at the first and second floors above disc bands. A band course runs along the eaves, topped with a plain cornice featuring antefixae. The building is capped with tall, corniced axial stacks and has slate roofs. Numbers 29-39 feature various types of dormers.

The north flank is made of polished ashlar and has a shallow advanced central bay. The south flank has an advanced four-storey right bay with a three-light corniced square projecting window, while the left two bays are detailed to match the main facade.

The rear elevation is constructed of stugged ashlar and includes single or tripartite windows. The entire terrace is raised above the level of Hyndland Road, supported by a polished ashlar retaining wall. There are attractive cast-iron balusters on the steps, which feature squat square piers, many of which support cast-iron lamp brackets.
