Description
The British Linen Bank, located at 166-170 Gorbals Street in Glasgow, was designed by James Salmon, Jun. in 1900. This former bank building features Glasgow style detailing and is a four-storey structure with six bays, constructed from red ashlar stone.
On the ground floor, there is a close entrance flanked by a shop and two round arched windows with radial glazing for the bank. The bank entrance is notable for its fine wrought-iron gate set under a round arch, which is supported by columns between channelled pilasters. The arch is inscribed with "British Linen Company Bank." There are cornices above both the ground and first floors.
The first and second floors contain single and bipartite windows framed in Gibbs surrounds, with a canted bay window on the south side that rises into the second floor. The third floor features semi-circular and basket-arched windows, along with an Arts and Crafts style iron balcony above the canted bay. The northern bay is designed to resemble a tower, with small windows and steep pediments on the first and third floors, although the turret is missing.
The building has sash and case windows with wooden mullions and transoms on the third floor. The roof is slate, with three ridge stacks and one wallhead ashlar stack. The rear of the building is constructed from rubble.
