Description

This is a two-storey medical building, with a single-storey section, dating to around 1913 and designed by Sir John James Burnet (John Burnet and Son). It is situated in Glasgow and forms part of the Western Infirmary complex.

The building is constructed of squared snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, and displays a Scots Renaissance style. The principal elevation, facing Church Street, is approximately six bays wide, with prominent crowstepped gables to the far right (south) and a recessed crowstepped gable to the right (north). A small corner tower is located at the far left (north). The entrance is architraved and situated in the first bay from the south, featuring a fleur-de-lys decorated panel above a sculpted panel with a bracketed cornice and the inscription "GLASGOW WESTERN INFIRMARY OUTDOOR DISPENSARY”. Segmental arched ground floor windows are present, with the bays to the right (south) featuring tripartite windows framed by a Gibbsian surround. Above, rectangular windows are set within moulded surrounds and have raised sculpted panels to the gable apexes, inscribed with 'MEDICINE' and 'SURGERY'. A keystoned oriel window is positioned in the recessed gable on the left (north). A prominent balustrade, featuring rectangular piers and shaped balusters over the cornice, runs along the single-storey bays.

The rear (east) elevation is a single-storey section running east to west. Round-headed dormers are present in the north return, alongside a balustraded parapet and a crow-stepped gable with an oculus.

The windows are a mixture of plate glass and multi-pane timber windows. The roof is pitched and covered in grey slates, with some later roof-lights.

Internally, the building has undergone some alterations and subdivision, but retains many original features and fittings. A large, central former dispensing hall is notable for its exposed riveted metal roof beams supported by bracketed supports with timber grotesques. Keystoned arcaded arches with rusticated vousoirs form the central hall and aisles and a full-length clearstorey is present.

A rectangular chapel is located to the rear, featuring an Arts and Crafts interior with exposed sandstone ashlar walls, timber paneling, and timber doors with glazed panels. It has a tripartite pointed arched window to the east gable end with stained glass, and further stained glass to other pointed arched windows. The chapel contains a sandstone ashlar altar with engaged Doric columns and a herring-bone patterned timber block floor. An octagonal timber lectern, with relief carving of pointed arch detail and set on a sandstone ashlar base, is also present, as is an open timber roof with painted rafters and purlins.
