Description
University Gate Lodge, located at 6 and 8 Dumbarton Road in Glasgow, dates from around 1870 and features late 19th-century additions by J J Burnet. This single-storey and attic Scots Baronial lodge is asymmetrical and includes a central tower, likely above the stair. The building is constructed of red sandstone ashlar, although much of it is now rendered. It has base, string, and eaves courses, with crow-stepped gables on the south and west elevations.
On the west (entrance) elevation, there is a doorway situated in the re-entrant angle of a single-storey wing to the right, with a narrow window flanking it on the left and a shallow pitched porch roof. To the left, an advanced single-storey and attic gabled bay features chamfered angles at the ground, which are corbelled to a square above. It has a window at the ground floor and narrow windows at the chamfered angles, although the window to the left is blocked. There is an attic window in the centre. A round-arched pedestrian gateway is positioned next to the porch on the right, featuring a decorative cast-iron gate and a round-arched pediment above the cornice, flanked by ball finials. To the left, there is a round ashlar gate pier topped with a conical cap.
The south elevation, facing Dumbarton Road, has an advanced gabled bay to the left with chamfered angles at the ground, which are corbelled to a square above. This bay includes a tripartite window at ground level and a bipartite window in the attic. A recessed single-storey wing to the right has a tripartite window in the centre and a crenellated parapet. The facade extends to the right, incorporating a round-arched pedestrian gateway linked to a gabled gateway with a round-arched opening, along with cast-iron gates.
On the east elevation, there is a doorway in the centre and a bipartite window to the left. To the right, there is a single-storey and attic gabled bay featuring a tripartite window at ground level and a bipartite attic window above. A modern flat-roofed extension is located to the right.
The lodge has 2-pane sash and case windows, many of which are now boarded up. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring a dormer with a half-piended roof to the east and a flat roof to the north. The gables have ashlar coped skews and skewputts. The centre of the roof has a crenellated tower, with stacks rising at angles and a broad ashlar stack abutting to the north.
The interior has not been seen.
