Description
The Zoology Building at the University of Glasgow, designed by Sir John James Burnet (Burnet, Son and Dick) between 1923 and 1927, is a two-storey neo-Baroque university department and museum building with a basement. It features an asymmetrical U-plan with a single-storey infill and a later range to the west. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, all channelled, with a plinth that includes keyblocked basement window architraves. A band course runs at ground floor level, and there is a continuous parapet that breaks through the roofline. A louvred cupola sits over the entrance range.
On the east elevation, the central entrance bay projects forward and has a recessed architrave with a panel above that reads "ZOOLOGY 1923." Above this is a stairlight that breaks through an open segmental pediment. The walls to the right and left of the entrance are plain. The north elevation consists of 12 bays separated by pilaster strips, featuring casement windows with glazing bars. The south elevation has a continuous plain wall that extends into the west lateral section, which includes a keyblocked, blind window and axial stacks, topped with a slate roof.
The building has steel-framed casement and hopper windows, with a grey slate piended roof on the north and east ranges, a replacement Mansard roof over the museum wing, and a later west range. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
Inside, as seen in 2010, the entrance hall features glazed timber vestibule doors with brass fixings, a later inner vestibule screen, and a granolithic floor with contrasting margins. The plain cornice and compartmental ceiling add to the hall's character. The main stair is broad with a platt stair, iron balusters with a timber handrail, and decorative newel finials with carved beast heads. The upper stair hall has a granolithic floor and a coved ceiling. The main lecture theatre includes tiered, curved seating (replacement), timber-paneled walls, and a timber balustrade at the rear of the seating, with the original window blind mechanism still in place. The zoology museum is a large rectangular room designed in the form of a temple, featuring a timber floor, colonnaded walls, and a compartmental ceiling. The laboratory has large north-facing windows.
