Description
Anderson’s College of Medicine, part of the University of Glasgow, is a medical teaching building located at 56 Dumbarton Road, Glasgow. Constructed between 1888 and 1889, initially designed by James Sellars in partnership with Campbell Douglas and John Keppie, the building has undergone several later additions and alterations. Honeyman & Keppie added to the structure in 1895, with Keppie & Henderson making alterations in 1936-7, and Keppie, Henderson & Gleave adding further additions in 1954-5. The interior was extensively rebuilt and extended in 1990, followed by refurbishment work beginning in 2007.
The building is designed in the Early Italian Renaissance style and comprises original four- and five-bay L-plan ranges connected to later rectangular blocks to the northwest. It features a chamfered entrance and an arched “tower” at an external angle, displaying varied roof heights. The exterior is constructed from squared snecked rubble sandstone with ashlar dressings. Significant sculpted panels by James Pittendreigh MacGillivray are found on the Dumbarton Road and east elevations.
The Dumbarton Road elevation includes a plinth and features stone mullioned and transomed windows in the western bays. Notable detail is present in the eastern bay, with a shallow projection hosting a tripartite window on the ground floor, and a corbelled balustraded balcony above its corresponding first-floor window. This upper window is distinguished by Corinthian column mullions and an arched, relief-sculpted tympanum springing from outer pilasters. A deep, bracketed cornice runs along the top, while a raised section returns single bay with a first-floor niche. The entrance bay is distinguished by a Corinthian columned portico, housing double-leaf panelled doors, a balustraded parapet, and an arched window above. A raised block faces south, incorporating a sculpted, corniced tablet and an open, arched, pedimented aedicule with a parapet. The east elevation has a projecting, pedimented first bay with a ground floor relief frieze surrounding a circular window and a six-light arched window above. The five bays to the north feature four-light windows on the ground floor and two-light, pedimented windows with column mullions above. Sculpted relief panels are present on the second floor, and the eaves cornice is punctuated by regular, corniced piers. The building connects to Pontecorvo, Robertson, and Virology Buildings.
The building has two-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate roof with axial and wallhead stacks.
The gate piers, gates, boundary walls and railings along Dumbarton Road are constructed from tall red sandstone, featuring cluster gate piers with obelisks, decorative wrought-iron gates, a dwarf wall, and decorative wrought-iron railings.
The interior, when viewed in 2010, had no surviving original features.
