Description
McConnel's Building, located at 307-333 Hope Street in Glasgow, is a four-storey tenement designed by John Keppie of Honeyman, Keppie and Mackintosh in 1906 for the Glasgow City Improvement Trust. The building features an astylar design with Art Nouveau detailing and is constructed of red ashlar.
Access to the open rear balconies is provided by a staircase located in the outer bays, which are equipped with metal handrails. The facade consists of three repeating sections, each flanked by splayed bays set in pilastered recesses topped with stylised segmental pediments. In the centre of each section are two single-light bays displaying the City of Glasgow coat of arms, dated 1907.
The building has stacks that are flanked by convex parapets with metal handrails, and the entrances feature open pediments and keyblocks. Grilled openings are coupled in giant recesses adorned with swags. The upper windows are arched and keyblocked, set within rectangular surrounds, with gablets rising through balustrades. The shops have a modillion cornice and glazed fanlights, and the ground floor treatment is repeated along Cowcaddens Street.
At the corner of the building is a circular tower topped with a slated dome, featuring a moulded cornice with cartouches. A bay of paired lights under a stylised segmental pediment connects the stair tower to the corner turret on Hope Street, while three bays are present on Cowcaddens Street, including an end bay with a pediment.
