Description

416-426 Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow is a commercial block built between 1899 and 1908, designed by T L Watson and Henry Mitchell in the Free Renaissance style. This four-storey building with an attic features modern shops and is constructed from ashlar stone, with a channelled design at the first floor. All windows are sash and case, framed in architraves.

The west block has 16 unequal bays and five return bays facing Garnet Street. It includes close entries with consoles and intricately carved, swan-necked pediments. The first floor features paired, canted bays that rise through three storeys, separated by single lights, with outer canted bays. There is a console-bracketed balcony frieze at the second floor, and the central lights in the canted bays are adorned with carved strap work pediments. The third floor is plain, with an eaves frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The attic has lights with pediments above single lights and shaped gables with aedicules over two-light windows.

At the top, there is a polygonal domed attic tower featuring semi-engaged columns, a frieze, and cornice with carved finials, topped by a chevron leaded bell-cast roof.

The return to Garnet Street follows a similar design, with a first-floor balcony that projects forward and a corbelled, corniced stack rising from a carved niche at the first floor.

The east block is symmetrical, with a central section of five bays. The three central bays curve to the second and third floors, featuring semi-engaged Ionic columns in the outer bays. The outer sections consist of three bays each, with canted windows in the outer bays, detailed similarly to the west block, and have pedimented dormers.
