Description
32 Trongate in Glasgow is a six-storey building designed by architects Thomson and Sandilands between 1903 and 1912. It was constructed for the City Improvement Trust and features classical detailing in polished red sandstone across all elevations. The first floor is channelled, and the ground floor has modern shops.
The Trongate elevation consists of nine bays arranged in a pattern of 4-1-3-1, with the narrower single bays featuring two-light windows and carved curvilinear pediments above the third bay. An off-centre bay includes twin arched doors (No 34) at ground level, flanked by pilasters and topped with a broken curvilinear pediment that has a sculptured tympanum.
Most windows are grouped in threes, with sash and case designs featuring either plate-glass or four-pane glazing, although there are some modern fixed-pane windows on the ground floor. The second and third floors are connected by giant Ionic pilasters that flank the bays. The upper two storeys have pilastered bays and a balustraded die parapet. The narrower bays include dormer windows in the attic, which are set within a balustrade and topped with truncated pyramid roofs.
At the corner of Trongate and Albion Street, the second to fifth floors are linked by giant pilasters, with an aedicule on the third floor. The attic storey features an octagonal dome with Baroque detailing.
The Albion Street elevation has eleven bays and a single bay return elevation to Bell Street, which are similarly detailed.
