Description
105-113 Bell Street in Glasgow is a colossal six-storey warehouse built in 1882 for the Glasgow and South Western Railway at a cost of $100,000. The building features a long and shallow-curved plan that aligns with the street. It is constructed with rock-faced ashlar above a rusticated ground floor, and has small windows that are mostly paired and small-paned. The stone has been cleaned, and the building was converted to flats around 1989-90. At the ground level, there are wide arched openings, and cast-iron columns that are 18 feet high and 12 inches in diameter support cast-iron beams. These beams carry concrete arches, marking an early example of the use of mass concrete in Glasgow.
