Description
The Railway Stables at 166-172 Bell Street in Glasgow were built around 1900 for the Glasgow and South Western Railway and were converted into flats around 1985. This tall, three-storey building is constructed of red brick and features a long street elevation. The arches over the second-floor windows spring from corbels or pilaster strips that group the bays. The only entrance is a pend located towards the right (west) side of the building. There is a cornice above the ground floor, and a brick band between the upper floors that may conceal a repair. The building has distinctive glazing, with plate-glass lower sashes at the ground and second floors, which may be an alteration. It also features a main cornice and modern rooflights in a slated mansard roof, along with chimney stacks. A rear wing forms a courtyard, with a railway embankment to the south.
