Description

Queen Street Station, located on West George Street in Glasgow, was designed by James Carswell and built between 1878 and 1880 by P and W MacLellan. The station features a 10-bay engine shed with segmentally arched roofs covering six tracks and four platforms. It is supported by cast-iron columns, which have Corinthian capitals at the northern end and Bell-capital columns, holding up lattice beams beneath Cathedral Street. The overall structure has a delicate lattice arch that spans 250 feet in length and 78 feet in height, with sections glazed using corrugated iron panels.

The ends of the station are decorated with fan-glazed designs. To the south, southeast, and southwest, the station now adjoins modern office buildings.

Additionally, there is a bridge featuring wrought-iron lattice girders and parapets made of cast-iron basket-arched panels, separated by panelled columns that rise to latticed coping, allowing for vehicular traffic. The contractors for this project were Smith and Naysmith from Bellahouston Ironworks in Glasgow.
