Description
The Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, located at 242 St Vincent Street in Glasgow, was built around 1840 and later remodeled with an additional rear hall. This building is a 5-bay section of a symmetrical terrace block, of which the eastern section (Nos 232-4) remains. It stands three stories high with a basement. The central bay is raised and advanced, constructed of ashlar with rustication at the basement level, featuring flat arches over the windows. The central entrance, located at the top of a staircase that oversails the basement area, is framed by a Doric portico with coupled, fluted columns and responds, a plain entablature, and a balustraded parapet. The windows are sash and case, set in architraves with 12-pane glazing. The ground floor has a moulded cill band and blank aprons, while the first floor features corniced windows, 2/3rds architraves with a linking stringcourse, and a console pediment in the center, along with a cornice. A cill band is present on the second floor, topped by an eaves cornice and a blocking course. The property is enclosed by cast-iron area railings.
Inside, the building was remodeled by J J Burnet. It includes a Tuscan columned, shallow-domed vestibule, a wood-panelled hall, and a carved timber staircase. The Lister Room features a Corinthian screen and a timber chimneypiece with a relief profile sculpture of Lister. The College Hall has a coved vestibule, a columned screen, side windows, a highly-carved timber chimneypiece with marble-shafted columns, round-headed windows with curvilinear leaded lights, and a fluted pilastered doorpiece at both entrances to the hall. The ceiling is coved and coffered with geometric compartments. The Alexandra Room has plaster panelled walls and a circular panelled corniced ceiling.
