Description
This building, located at 230 and 232 St Vincent Street in Glasgow, dates from around 1840 and is a remnant of a formerly symmetrical classical terrace block. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and features nine bays, of which the three eastern bays are raised and advanced. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, with the basement rusticated and adorned with voussoired lintels and outer windows. Each entry is accessed via steps that oversail the basement area.
At No 232, there are piers at the foot of the steps, a pilastered doorpiece, and a consoled fanlight. The entrance at No 234 has an architraved and corniced design. The windows are sash and case style, set within architraves, with some featuring 12-pane glazing. The ground floor architraves drop to a ground-level band course, and there is a continuous cill band that is broken by the architraves, along with panelled friezes. The first-floor windows sit on the cill band and are corniced. A string course runs at one-third height, and there is a cornice at the first floor. The eaves cornice is a blocking course, and cast-iron balconies are present at the first floor of the set-back houses, which are now united.
On the elevation facing Blythswood Street, there are four bays with a lower six-bay later section. The second bay from the south is blind, as are the fourth bays at the first and second floors. The central two bays are slightly advanced, and the main elevation details continue here. A two-bay central corniced wallhead stack is also present. The later northern section is two storeys high, with the first storey canted inwards towards the rear elevation of the main block, featuring tripartite mullioned windows and a pedimented gable.
Inside, the building includes Ionic columns in the hall screens, and at No 234, there are cast-iron stair balusters.
