Description
6-20 Bell Street in Glasgow is a six-storey and attic neo-Egyptian warehouse designed by architects Campbell, Reid and Wingate between 1914 and 1921. The building features five bays and is constructed of polished red sandstone, with channelled pilaster strips at the ground level. The first through fourth floors have windows that are recessed from the wall plane and are divided by giant pillars topped with Egyptian capitals, which support a stylised entablature that is linked at the fourth floor to create a balcony effect.
The ground floor has five regularly spaced openings, although most are now blocked, leaving only two visible. All windows are three-light with six-pane glazing. Between the first and third floors, there is a typical period detail of a recessed broad incised panel located below the window cills. The fourth-floor windows feature mullions that are bracketed to support the entablature above. The fifth floor has windows that are separated by bold uncarved blocks, each with a small block set into the eaves cornice. At the attic level, bipartite pedimented dormers project from the tiled mansard roof, which is topped with a cast-iron parapet adorned with giant anthemion finials.
