Description

12 University Gardens in Glasgow is a four-bay, three-storey and attic Art Nouveau terraced house designed by J Gaff Gillespie (Salmon, Son & Gillespie) in 1900. The building features polished ashlar sandstone, with a channeled ground floor, a ground floor cill band, and simple recessed architraves around the ground floor windows.

The entrance is located at the base of a full-height canted bay, which is the second from the north. This entrance is architraved and corniced. On the first floor, there is a round-headed window in the north bay, which has a solid corbelled balcony in front adorned with a decorative wrought-iron panel. The building also has a dentil band and a cornice over the south bays, with the canted bay breaking through the cornice and featuring a cill band. The multi-light fully glazed attic windows are divided by timber strips, and the projecting eaves lead to a bell-cast roof. There is a raised section to the left that is attached to the turret.

The windows are sash and case with multi-pane glazing. The roofs are slate, featuring a gabled dormer and corniced mutual stacks.

The interior, as seen in 1988, retains numerous original features, including an oak beamed entrance hall with Art Nouveau and Glasgow Style fittings and panelling. There is a fretwork door with stained glass panels and sculpted head stair newels, along with further fittings and fixtures in the main rooms. Stained glass by Oscar Paterson (1863-1934) can also be found within the house.

The boundary walls and entrance piers flanking the entrance steps are topped with cushion caps, although the cast-iron railings are now missing.
