Description

13 University Gardens in Glasgow is a three-storey and attic pair of classical townhouses designed by John James Burnet (Burnet Son and Campbell) in 1882. Originally part of a terrace to the northwest, these houses feature simplified Renaissance details and a paired columned portico. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar with a channeled ground floor and rock-faced rustication on the basement, while the rear elevation is made of squared rubble. Architectural details include a ground floor level band course, a ground floor cill course, a modillion eaves cornice with a dentil band, and architraved windows.

The northeast entrance elevation has four bays and showcases a painted paired Tuscan portico with paired columns at the center and a cornice parapet. The first floor features two outer oriels with cast-iron plant boxes and balustraded parapets, while the central windows are corniced. The southeast elevation includes a canted corner bay on the outer right with a central bipartite corniced window, a bracketed solid balcony at the first floor, regular windows at the ground and second floors, and multi-light attic windows canted in the center bay between linked corniced wallhead stacks. There are two further bays on the outer left with a two-bay rear return that continues the main elevation detailing, and the corner bay on the outer left is canted above the ground floor. The southwest elevation has an irregular arrangement of windows and features a two-storey canted bay on the outer left. The northwest elevation is blank and rendered.

The windows are timber sash and case, primarily with four-pane glazing. The roofs are covered in grey slate, with the three-storey southwest section having an independent piended roof and corniced wallhead stacks.

Inside, as seen in No. 11 in 2010, there are numerous original features, including plasterwork and timberwork. The vestibule has a tiled floor, leading to a Tuscan columned entrance hall. A colored glass panel is located below the stair, which has a turned timber balustrade. The principal room on the first floor features decorative plasterwork and a pedimented timber fireplace, while the attic room has timber paneling, a dentilled cornice, and decorative plasterwork, illuminated by a cupola.

The property is enclosed by a balustraded boundary wall, which includes a solid corner section with a bracketed panel inscribed "UNIVERSITY GARDENS." There are die walls flanking the entrance, topped with cast-iron parapets.
