Description

14 University Gardens in Glasgow is a three-storey and attic, asymmetrical three-bay Renaissance terraced house designed by John James Burnet (Burnet, Son and Campbell) in 1904. The building features polished ashlar stonework, with a channelled design at the ground floor.

The entrance is framed by anta pillars and pilasters, leading to a canted bay on the right that forms a portico. This portico supports a solid parapet on the first floor, which includes cast-iron plant boxes. The northern bays contain single light and tripartite windows, while the canted bay extends from the first to the second floor, featuring windows set in recessed margins and corbelled out at the second floor. A tripartite gabled dormer is set back, with a tall, narrow, attached chimney stack to the right. The southern bays have plain windows, with a modillion cornice on the second floor and a corniced tripartite dormer above.

The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case with glazing bars, and the first-floor windows have six-pane upper sashes. The roof is slate, with corniced mutual and wallhead stacks.

Inside, as seen in 1988, there is a carved timber entrance hall chimneypiece and a stained glass hall light. The ground floor room features a columned, raised area and extensive timber panelling, along with carved timber newels and an open carved timber screen on the first floor.

The boundary walls and entrance piers include a cushion-capped pier to the right of the entrance steps, with a short length of cast-iron railing to the left; however, other railings are now missing.
