Description
The Howe Sewing Machine Company building, located at 48 Avenue Street in Bridgeton, Glasgow, was designed by A Kennedy, Son and Myles and constructed between 1872 and 1873. It consists of several sections on a triangular island site and features two substantial chimney stacks that have been cut down. The main structure is a long, 17-bay, three-storey range facing Fielden Street, with a lower adjoining range to the south. The long return elevation to Barrowfield Street includes a continuous roof ventilator. The building is constructed of red and contrasting yellow brick, has blocked eaves, and slate roofs, with most of the glazing being original. There are two wide openings on the ground floor facing Fielden Street. A taller range that was originally at the center of the complex has been demolished, along with the main block that adjoined it to the west, which was removed in 1969.
