Description

The Presbytery of Sacred Heart Church, located at 50 Old Dalmarnock Road in Glasgow, was designed by Pugin and Pugin in 1890, with later alterations made by Gillespie Kidd and Coia between 1953 and 1954, including fresco restoration by William Crosbie. The church is built in the Roman Basilica style, primarily using rock-faced red ashlar and a steel frame, featuring base and eaves courses, semicircular-arched keystoned openings, and stone transoms and mullions.

The entrance elevation is symmetrical, showcasing a triple-arched entrance at ground level. Above this, a giant Diocletian window is framed by giant Ionic pilasters, adorned with sculptures of St. Andrew and St. Patrick, along with a figure of Christ set within the supporting pedimented gable. Flanking stair towerlets are topped with Baroque caps.

On the south and north elevations, there are giant Diocletian windows on each of the three-bay flanks. The interior consists of three bays with paired marble Ionic columns, and the chancel features an opulent use of white marble, with columns that support a timber baldachino. The passage aisles are lined with fluted pilasters, and a figure of Christ by Jack Mortimer is positioned over the altar. The glazing includes a multi-pane leaded pattern with some figurative coloured glass, and the roof is covered with grey slates.

To the north, the presbytery is a three-storey, three-bay structure with a top floor that extends above the main cornice, featuring gabled dormerheads and chamfered openings. The openings below are roll-moulded, and the building is constructed of grey rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof. The property is enclosed by a low boundary wall with iron railings and square gatepiers.
