Description
Pratis is a late 18th-century farmhouse with 19th-century alterations, built on the Montrave estate. It was likely designed to be symmetrical, but the northern wing was never completed. The main house comprises a two-bay, two-story block with a pediment, featuring a Roman Doric doorpiece on the right side. A lower, two-story single-bay wing extends to the south, showcasing a Venetian window on the first floor. On the north side, where a matching wing should be, there is a late 19th-century canted ground-floor window. The construction utilizes whin rubble with ashlar long and short dressings, quoins, and raised quoins marking the transition between the central block and the wing. Architectural details suggest a possible original central doorway. The house features tall panelled stacks and a slate roof, with a platform over the wing protected by a cast-iron balustrade. Later rear wings and additions have been incorporated.
A well-preserved steading provides an excellent example of Fife farm buildings. The north range and part of the east range were constructed by 1796, forming an L-plan courtyard. A large, rectangular, six-bay covered cattle court is centrally positioned. The steading is built using whin and rubble with long and short dressings. The north range includes a thrashing floor with a loft above and an attached engine house on the rear, all under a slate roof. The east range houses stabling and a five-bay cart shed. Central to the steading is a group of six linked ranges characterized by piended, pantiled roofs and ventilators. These ranges are connected to a loft range by a timber and slated bridge. Historic records, including plans from the Survey of Pratis lands (1796), document these structures.
