Description
Gardeners Cottage, located in Castle, Wemyss, is a group of traditional gabled cottages designed by Alexander Tod in the later 19th century. The cottages are single storey with an attic and feature decorative timber-pedimented porches and dormer windows.
No 1 is a 3-bay cottage with a harled exterior. The southeast entrance elevation includes a porch supported by rustic trunk-columns that breaks the eaves, leading to a boarded timber door with a letterbox fanlight above it in the central bay. There are windows in the flanking bays and timber-pedimented dormer windows above the outer bays.
Nos 2 and 3 are a pair of 5-bay cottages constructed from red sandstone, accented with contrasting ashlar dressings. Their southeast entrance elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central window flanked by porches similar to No 1, with part-glazed timber doors in the flanking bays and an additional window in the outer bays. Above, there are three regularly spaced timber-pedimented dormer windows.
The cottages have 8- and 10-pane lying-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case windows, and are topped with grey slate roofs. The chimneys are made of coped ashlar, with No 1 having a full set of polygonal cans, while Nos 2 and 3 have some cans as well. The eaves are deeply overhanging.
Surrounding the cottages is a high, flat-coped red brick garden wall, which features a pointed-arch stone at the base of a rounded end, possibly indicating a stack, to the southeast.
