Description

Stravithie House is a Scottish Baronial mansion built in 1866 and enlarged in 1892 by Gillespie and Scott in the same style. Originally a small two-storey house with an attic and basement, it has an L-shaped plan and is constructed of snecked rubble with polished ashlar dressings.

The north front features an advanced wing to the right, which has a crow-stepped gable and a large bi-partite window on the ground floor, a single window on the first floor, and a small window in the attic above. The former entrance door has been blocked and converted into a window in the re-entrant, which is carried up as a tower with a crow-stepped gable and a heraldic panel over the door, along with a single window above. The entrance steps have been altered to accommodate a small rendered crow-stepped porch added in 1955.

The left-hand bay has windows on both the ground and first floors, topped with a crow-step gabled dormer. The west front displays the date 1866 on the chimney gable, while the south front consists of three bays with a canted bay on the right. The 1892 additions are located on the east side. The north front has four bays and features a tall four-storey tower with a conical roof above the entrance in the left-hand centre bay. The south front has tripartite windows on all floors to the right.

The original glazing remains throughout the house, with plate glass on the principal floor and centre divide sashes elsewhere for the 1866 section. The 1892 additions have centre divides in the lower sashes and small panes in the upper sections. Inside the 1866 part, there is typical mid-19th century plasterwork and woodwork, with the southeast apartment on the principal floor showcasing a light Jacobean-style ceiling.
