Cottage To North Of Stables, Over Rankeilour House

The stables at Over Rankeilour House were likely designed by architect James MacLeran and supervised by architect Alexander Laing, with construction completed by 1800. This L-shaped building features a nine-bay symmetrical front facing south, constructed from droved ashlar with a cornice at the eaves and a slated roof. The central three bays are slightly advanced and topped with a pediment. There is a central cart-entry with a segmental head that has been blocked, and to the left, there is a door with a fanlight. Above this, in the pediment, is a blind thermal window with painted glazing.

To the left of the centre, there are three bays that used to have a door flanked by windows; the left window has been enlarged to create a garage opening. Above this, there are two blind openings painted with part-glazed doors, which flank a loft door with a hoist above. The three bays to the right of the centre mirror the former arrangement on the left side at the ground floor, with an unaltered centre window above and later bipartite windows to the left and right.

On the first floor, there are four bipartite windows. At the rear, there is a lower and later wing with a west front made of coursed rubble and droved ashlar dressings, featuring a block cornice at the wall-head and a slated roof. This section includes four cart-sheds with segmental-headed openings and projecting key-blocks.

Attached to the north under the same roof is a cottage with two windows and a central door, which has a later attic above. The courtyard has seen alterations, with the main block made of boulder-rubble and the side wing in coursed rubble, most openings having been changed. An original flagged and setted path surrounds the entire building. In the courtyard, there is a pair of coped ashlar gate-piers. The single-storey, three-bay cottage to the north of the stables is built from rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring a boarded central door with a rectangular fanlight, 12-pane sash windows, straight skews, corniced end stacks, and a slate roof.
