Description

Kilconquhar House is a late 16th-century tower house, originally of an L-plan with five storeys and a stair tower. The stair tower was rebuilt in the 18th century, taking a larger scale and platt form, though seemingly built on the footprint of the original tower. Circular angle turrets are a distinctive feature.

The south-east front was redesigned in 1831 by William Burn, with a two-storey basement and attic incorporating bay windows and crowstepped gables. A further revision of an unexecuted 1831 scheme, undertaken in 1839 by William Burn and David Bryce, altered the north-west (entrance) front, which now also features two storeys and a basement. A curved pediment frames the doorpiece, with a cartouche. A canted bay is corbelled to a square shape at the second floor on the south-west front.

The house is built of rubble and has a slated roof. A north-east addition has been built, and internal alterations were carried out in the 1920s.
