Description
The University Library on South Street in St Andrews was originally built between 1612 and 1643 and reconstructed from 1764 to 1767 based on designs by the wright John Gardner. It was later extended to the west in the same style by architect Robert Reid between 1828 and 1830. The building features a two-storey ashlar facade with pedimented bays and niches on the first floor. Ground floor windows were inserted in the 1890s, and the south wall displays 16th century sculptures from St Mary's Chapel. Inside, the Galleried Upper Hall boasts a Roman Doric fluted pine column and a coved ceiling. The Senate Room was remodelled in 1904 by architect Sir R Rowand Anderson.
