Description
The School House in Newburn is a row of three buildings, all featuring harled exteriors with ashlar margins. The central building likely dates from the mid to late 18th century and is two storeys high with three bays; its original central door has been converted into a window. To the west is a taller building from the early 19th century, also two storeys and three bays, which retains its central door framed by cavetto reveals and broad margins. This building has a two-storey wing made of whin rubble that extends two bays to the north, forming a T-plan. Both buildings have 12-pane sash windows, skews, and corniced end stacks. To the east is a long single-storey schoolroom added in the later 19th century, which was extended in the mid-20th century to serve as a village hall. This schoolroom features a corniced and flat-roofed panel to the left and four 12-pane sash windows. All buildings have slate roofs.
