Description

25 Somerville Square in Burntisland is a 17th-century, three-storey, rectangular-plan two-part tenement that forms part of an irregular terrace, featuring a forestair and corbel courses on the jettied principal and first-floor sections. The building is harled, with stone cills and painted margins.

On the north elevation, the entrance to No. 25 has a forestair leading to a panelled door on the principal floor at the outer right, with a door below in the stair. There is a small window to the left at ground level, adjacent to another window on the outer left below the corbelled course. The principal floor has a small window to the outer left, and the second floor features a small window at the centre, with the roofline broken above. There are also windows to the outer right and left.

For Nos. 26 and 27, a forestair from the right leads to a pedimented door on the principal floor to the left of centre, situated in a broad slightly advanced bay. The carved pediment is a later addition dated 1720. There is a timber door in the stair return at ground level, with a small window in the return to the right at the first floor. Two windows are located at ground level to the left below a corbel in the re-entrant, extending to a stepped course. A small window is centrally positioned above, with the roofline broken to the right over the door. There is also a door to the outer right with a window above at the first and second floors.

On the south elevation, No. 25 has a door to the outer left with a window to the right of centre at ground level. A pedestrian bridge fly-over connects to a part-glazed door on the principal floor, with three windows to the right, and three windows at the second floor close to the eaves.

For Nos. 26 and 27, there are windows to the left and right of centre at ground level, with a flight of stairs and walkway to the outer right leading to a part-glazed door on the principal floor, accompanied by an adjacent light to the left. There is a window at centre (slightly higher) and another window to the left, with three flat-roofed dormer windows above breaking the eaves.

The sash and case windows feature a glazing pattern of 6-, 9-, and 12-panes, with plate glass glazing in the small stair windows. The roofs are covered with pantiles, with ashlar coped skews on No. 25 and crowstepped gables on Nos. 26 and 27, along with coped ashlar stacks with cans and thackstanes.
