Description
22-24 Buchanan Street in Dunfermline is an earlier 19th-century, semi-detached, two-storey and attic tenement block. The principal elevation faces south and features a classical pilastered doorcase. The main facade is made of coursed droved sandstone, while the other sides are constructed from coursed sandstone rubble, with polished ashlar dressings. The building has a droved base course and eaves course.
On the south elevation, there is a central entrance with pilasters and a corniced entablature, leading to a plain timber door with a rectangular fanlight. Flanking this entrance are windows on each floor, with additional boxed dormer windows in the attic.
The north elevation includes a central semicircular-plan stair tower with a catslide roof and a stair window. There is a small opening below to the right and an entrance with a panelled timber door and a 5-pane rectangular fanlight on the right return. The ground and first floors have flanking windows that are set back, and there is a small opening to the left of the outer right first-floor window. A low single-storey outhouse wing of various dates projects forward to the left, with the oldest section intact on the north side and a window on the right return.
The west elevation is a blank gable end. The building mainly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with grey slate roofs. The outhouse wing has a piended roof, and there are corniced end stacks on either side of the main block, along with a tall coped stack on the north section of the outhouse wing, primarily with octagonal cans.
The interior has not been inspected since 1998. The outhouse to the northwest is a single-storey lean-to made of sandstone rubble, with droved sandstone dressings on the northwest side. It has two entrances with boarded timber doors on the principal east elevation.
