Description
Dalgairn House is a classical mansion built in 1770, with an entrance raised and interior plasterwork added in 1800. This symmetrical building has two storeys above a raised basement and is constructed from coursed whin rubble, featuring yellow ashlar long and short dressings.
The south elevation has six bays, with a central doorpiece that is pedimented and includes sidelights, flanked by four engaged Roman Doric columns. A tall round-arched fanlight breaks into the pediment, and the entrance is approached by a broad curving stone stair with a simple splayed cast-iron handrail. The house has 12-pane sash windows throughout, a band course at ground floor level, and a mutule cornice. There are two piended and canted dormers, bold shouldered end stacks, and a steep-pitched piended roof covered with slates and a platform.
The east and west elevations each have three bays, with the west elevation featuring a door that opens onto a platform adorned with decorative cast-iron balusters. The north elevation has a central wall-head pediment and a tall central stair window.
Inside, there is some decorative plasterwork, including swag and fan decorations over the curved stair, ceiling roses in the west ground floor room with elliptical shapes and swagged details, and a cornice in the porch with simple fan decoration.
