Description
The Gothic Wing of the Burnside Hotel in East Burnside, Cupar, is an earlier 19th-century building that may incorporate some earlier materials. It is a two-storey, four-bay structure featuring an arched cart-bay and a later single-storey Gothic projection that was once the United Presbyterian Church. This building has undergone alterations and is now used as a shop and flats, as well as being part of the adjacent Burnside Hotel. The principal elevation is constructed of coursed sandstone.
On the south elevation, the penultimate bay on the right has a ground floor arched cart-bay opening that is now glazed, featuring a timber two-leaf boarded door that is half-boarded at the top. The bay on the far right contains an entrance door, while the far left bay's ground floor is obscured by a single-storey wing that has simple pointed arch window openings, culminating in a canted bay. This wing is now part of the Burnside Hotel and is connected by a modern addition to the west. The window openings are irregular.
The east elevation has a rubble-built gable with a weathered datestone from around 179? located near the apex. The north elevation has been altered and is dominated by a large mirrored pair of steps set at right angles, providing access to the upper flats 1 and 1A. The west elevation is harled and features an entrance door to the right, along with a single-storey lean-to addition on the outer right.
The building predominantly features 8-pane timber sash and case windows with horns on the south elevation, while other elevations display a variety of glazing and modern roof lights. The roof is covered with grey slates and includes a large central ridge stack and smaller gable stacks.
Inside, the ground floor houses a picture framing shop with rubble walls and some iron tethering rings.
The boundary walls consist of a low coursed sandstone wall with coped tops to the southwest, featuring square piers at either end, which continues to the north. To the southeast, there is a low coursed sandstone coped wall with a square corniced pier, leading to a high rubble wall with flat coping on the east side.
