Description

The Walled Garden, Kellie Castle, is a complex of buildings developed from the 14th century onwards, encompassing a castle and associated structures. The North Tower, possibly built on a 14th-century foundation, is primarily of the late 15th or early 16th century, with a top storey and turrets added in the late 16th century; the conical roofs of these turrets have been cut back and are now under a main roof. The tower features a vaulted ground floor and four storeys above. The East Tower is dated 1573, bearing the initials MH (Margaret Hay), and was initially linked to the North Tower by a passage. A top storey was added in the 17th century, and it incorporates an L-plan with a turnpike stair in the north wing, rising from the third to the fourth floor in a corbelled angle above a bridging arch. An L-plan linking building was constructed between 1573 and 1606, incorporating a south tower, and a long, three-storey, four-bay range with public rooms that display decorative dormer heads (one renewed in 1724). An entrance is located in the re-entrant angle, featuring a corbelled turnpike stair above. Conical, corbelled angle turrets are present at the fourth floor. A further entrance leads to the vaulted hall on the west, with a false gable corbelled over the third floor. The north elevation has an additional stair and other projections. The entire structure was restored in 1878 by Professor Lorimer. All construction is of squared rubble, and all gables are crowstepped, with coped chimney stacks, some featuring diamond shafts. Windows are sash and case, with glazing from the restoration period. The interior includes several vaulted ground-floor rooms. A main stair, possibly late 17th or early 18th century, with fretted balusters, leads to the Hall, now the Drawing Room, which has panelling dating to circa 1660 and some 18th-century panelling. A chimney piece in the style of Robert Adam is present at the east. The With - Drawing Room, now the Dining Room, also contains circa 1660 panelling with painted decoration of 18th-century date. The Library, in the first floor of the East Tower, has a plaster ribbed ceiling dated 1617. The Vine Room and Earl’s Room feature good 17th-century plaster ceilings, one dated 1676, with the former containing a circular painting by De Wet. Several other interesting internal details are present. A dovecot has been inserted into the south wall of the low office and stable courtyard. A walled garden is situated nearby, with a garden house at the north-west designed by Robert Lorimer, who also laid out the garden.
