Officers' Mess, Domestic Side, Raf Leuchars

The Officers' Mess on the Domestic Side at RAF Leuchars is a large building complex dating from 1939. It consists of linked dining, recreation, and accommodation wings arranged around a largely U-shaped courtyard, with later alterations and additions, particularly to the central courtyard wing. The design is in the Georgian Revival style, featuring cream harl with moulded architraves on some entrance doors, a base course, and projecting cills. The building includes some traditional 12-pane timber sash and case windows, although most have non-traditional glazing, and there are some ridge stacks topped with grey slate roofs.

The central courtyard wing is a single-storey structure with 15 bays, featuring gabled advanced end bays and a central three-bay gabled entrance porch. This porch has a tripartite round-arched entrance with a datestone from 1939 above it, along with recessed glazed entrance doors and round-arched fanlights. The long flanking wings are two-storey, each with five piended slated dormers and some gabled bays.

Inside the central courtyard wing, as seen in 2007, there is a large reception room that features simple cornicing and a moulded stone chimneypiece with a straightforward timber mantelpiece.
