Sundial, War Memorial Gardens, Bennochy Road, Kirkcaldy

The War Memorial located in the War Memorial Gardens on Bennochy Road in Kirkcaldy is a significant structure dedicated to the memory of those who served in both World Wars. Designed by Heiton and McKay in 1923, the First World War memorial features a central stepped ashlar cenotaph adorned with bronze figures on three sides representing each branch of the armed forces. Surrounding this are flanking walls, each displaying 18 bronze commemorative plaques.

The Second World War memorial, created by Williamson and Hubbard in 1954, consists of a white sarcophagus tomb set on a chamfered plinth, with decorative consoles supporting a tabletop. Behind it is a quadrant wall that includes flanking ashlar piers marked with the dates '1939' and '1945', along with 11 bronze commemorative plaques and a frieze inscribed with the words "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS".

Additionally, there is a sundial featuring a stop-chamfered ashlar plinth on a moulded base, with a carved frieze that reads "At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them". The sundial has a stepped cope, although the gnomon is missing. The site is further enhanced by square ashlar gatepiers with decorative ironwork lamps and low quadrant walls.
