12 Wemyssfield, Kirkcaldy

14 Wemyssfield in Kirkcaldy is a pair of semi-detached villas built in the later 19th century. The buildings are two stories high with an attic and feature four bays. They are constructed from dressed ashlar with polished dressings, while the sides and rear are made of coursed rubble. There is a base course and an eaves cornice with a blocking course, and the first-floor windows have architraved surrounds, with those in the outer bays also lugged. The windows are set within stone mullions.

The west elevation is symmetrical, showcasing pilastered and balustraded doorways with tall, narrow panelled timber doors and plate glass fanlights in the outer bays at ground level, along with windows on the first floor. The bay to the right of the center (No 12) has a bipartite window on each floor, while the bay to the left of the center (No 14) features a canted bay with tripartite windows on both floors. The ground floor windows have pilastered mullions and stiff leaf capitals that align with the sash bars leading to architraved window heads. There is a wall with a timber pedestrian door on the outer left side. The inner bays have canted, tripartite dormer windows above.

The south elevation, corresponding to No 12 (Preston Villa), has a broad gable with asymmetrical fenestration, including a blocked window on the outer left at ground level and two additional windows on each floor grouped around the center. Twin gablehead stacks are positioned flanking decorative cast-iron railings.

The north elevation, corresponding to No 14, is similar to the south elevation but includes a small window to the right in the gablehead.

The east elevation features symmetrical fenestration with canted tripartite dormer windows flanking a wallhead stack at the center. The windows throughout have a 4-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case style. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and the chimneys are made of coped ashlar with decorative flue shields, while the ashlar-coped skews and cast-iron downpipes have decorative rainwater hoppers.

Inside No 14, there is a tiled vestibule with an etched glass screen door and some decorative cornicing. The interior of No 12 was not seen in 1996.

The boundary walls and gatepiers consist of low saddleback-coped ashlar walls with some railings to the west, while semi-circular-coped rubble walls are found elsewhere. The gatepiers are square-coped and finialled, with chamfered ashlar detailing.
