Description
32-26 Bridge Street in Dunfermline is a two-storey and attic terraced tenement block built in 1905 by Muirhead and Rutherford, with a remodelled principal (south) elevation in 1912, also by the same architects. The ground floor features a shop with large plate glass display windows that span the entire width of the elevation, complemented by a pair of oriel windows above. The principal elevation is constructed of ashlar stone on a polished granite base, with an eaves band and coped gables.
The south elevation includes a recessed entrance on the left side, featuring a glazed timber door set within a glazed timber screen with flanking sidelights. The display windows on either side have narrow upper panes and deeper lower panes. A timber fascia with paired mutules supports the cornice, which is adorned with three pairs of straight decorated brackets. The elevation curves at the outer left, where it projects from the adjacent building, creating a curved wraparound shopfront. Access to the upper floors is provided via a vennel that is incorporated into the building next door.
On the first floor, there are two recessed canted 8-light timber mullioned and transomed windows, with the mullions featuring mutules. Each window has a deep harled lintel that rises to the eaves and splayed reveals. The flanking and intervening masonry is divided into panels with margins at the edges, and a corniced sandstone plaque with a bracketed cill at the center bears the date 1912. There is also a first-floor window on the outer left return. The roof features a central 2-light boxed dormer, flanked by two 3-light boxed dormers.
The display windows are fixed-frame, with timber casements and fixed leaded upper lights in the oriels. The attic has 3-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slate with a red tiled ridge, and there are corniced gablehead stacks on both the east and west sides, each with round cans. The interior was not inspected in 1998.
