Description
The conservatory at Glassmount House, designed by Mackenzie & Moncur, dates from the late 19th century. It features an elegant pagoda-style design with a cupola-capped polygonal entrance, a pitch-roofed pedimented link, and lean-to glasshouse ranges arranged in a U-plan.
On the south elevation, the entrance bay is polygonal and advanced, featuring a curved door and a polygonal roof that leads to a domed lantern topped with a decorative cast-iron finial. Behind this is a broader rectangular bay with a pagoda-style roof, also adorned with decorative cast-iron brattishing and finials. To the outer right is a lower link section.
The roof includes arcaded astragals with decoratively etched spandrels and a multi-pane glazing pattern. Inside, there is a maker's plate above the door that reads "Hot House Builders & Heating Engineers / Edinburgh & Glasgow." The interior boasts stone-topped staging and a decoratively-tiled floor, with shelves positioned over heated pipes and slate shelving supported by metal bamboo-style brackets.
The west elevation features a lower glasshouse link with a door that has a decorative finial and pediment. The south elevation includes a high eight-bay lean-to range to the north, with a lower bay on the outer right that adjoins the link section at a right angle. The east elevation has a lower isolated lean-to range to the west. The conservatory retains its original window and roof ventilator opening mechanisms, along with stone-fronted raised beds and staging.
