Conservatory, Glassmount House

Mackenzie & Moncur, probably late 19th century. Elegant pagoda-style conservatory with cupola-capped polygonal entrance, pitch-roofed pedimented link and lean-to glasshouse ranges forming U-plan.

PAGODA-STYLE CONSERVATORY:

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: advanced polygonal entrance bay to centre with curved door and polygonal roof giving way to domed lantern with decorative cast-iron finial. Broader rectangular-plan, piended bay behind with pagoda-style roof capped by decorative cast-iron brattishing and finials. Lower link (see below) to outer right.

Arcaded astragals with decoratively etched spandrels, and multi-pane glazing pattern to roof.

INTERIOR: maker's plate above door worded 'Hot House Builders & Heating Engineers / Edinburgh & Glasgow'; stone-topped staging and decoratively-tiled floor. Shelves by pivoting panes over heated pipes, slate shelving on metal bamboo-style supports.

LINK SECTION:

W ELEVATION: lower glasshouse link with decoratively-finialled pedimented door.

LEAN-TO RANGES:

S ELEVATION: high 8-bay lean-to range to N with lower bay to outer right adjoining link section at right angles.

E ELEVATION: lower isolated lean to range to W.

Original window- and roof-ventilator-opening mechanisms. Stone fronted raised beds and staging.
