Description
This is an 18th-century farmhouse with a steading, partially converted into dwellings, forming a U-shaped courtyard. The steading was altered in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of harled walls with painted margins, and rubble walls with ashlar margins. It features a crowstepped gable and a segmental-headed cart arch with voussoirs and stone mullions.
The south-east (courtyard) elevation presents a symmetrical two-storey farmhouse with a door in the centre, a converted window above it, and bipartite windows in the flanking bays on both floors. A single-storey section to the left includes a window and a door to the right. The left arm of the courtyard has a modern patio door, a window, and two further windows, with a small boarded timber door high up to the left. The right arm features a cart arch and a door. The wings are of rubble construction.
The north-west (rear) elevation shows the farmhouse to the right of centre, with small windows in the bays and a small window at first floor level. Lower flanking bays include two windows to the right and eight tiny windows to the left. The north-east elevation has a long, low range with a row of tiny windows. The south-west elevation displays a variety of altered openings, including a new porch in the outer left.
The windows are timber sash and case windows with 12- and 16-pane glazing. Modern pantiles cover the roof. The building has harled stacks with thackstanes and cans.
Easter Balbairdie is a good early example of a traditional U-plan steading with an integral two-storey farmhouse, demonstrating the Fife vernacular practice of using pantiles and crowstepped gables. The building's category was changed from B to C(S) in August 2006.
