Description

6-12 New Row in Dunfermline is a commercial building designed by Muirhead and Rutherford in 1912. It is three stories tall with an attic and features six bays. The building has shops on the ground floor and offices above, showcasing an Edwardian Baroque style. The principal (west) elevation includes curved broken-bed pediments and radiating keyblocks above a pair of first-floor windows, as well as a segmental pediment above the outer right bay. The principal elevation is finished in polished sandstone ashlar.

The west elevation is built into sloping ground and has a segmental-headed entrance with a moulded upper surround and a bracket-like keystone to the left of center. It features a panelled timber door with a segmental-headed rectangular fanlight, flanked by pilasters that support a moulded cornice. The flanking shopfronts, including one on the outer right, have recessed entrances to the left, each with a glazed timber-framed door and a 6-light rectangular fanlight, with the door to No 6 likely being original. The right shopfront has a full-height replacement window over a glazed brick base. There is also a vennel entry to the outer left.

Above the ground floor, there is a window in each bay on every floor. The windows in the outer right bay and the outer left pair are vertically joined by shared architraves, with brackets at the first floor and projecting cills. The outer right windows have a single stone mullion, while the outer left windows feature moulded inner surrounds and radiating keyblocks topped with curved broken-bed pediments on the first floor. The second floor has smaller keyblocks and aprons. The two bays on the outer left are topped with a gable that has a segmental-headed attic window in the center.

The principal elevation has 2-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slate with a platform apex, and there is a coped wallhead stack to the south. The principal elevation also features cast-iron downpipes with decorative hoppers.
