Description

Callendar House, located in Callendar Park, Falkirk, was built between 1869 and 1877 by Brown and Wardrop (completed as Wardrop and Reid). The current external appearance reflects a remodelling in the style of Francois Ier of an earlier house that dates from several periods. The total frontage measures 300 feet. The northwest angle of the main block features a small tower house that likely dates back to the late 14th century. This was extended to an L-plan by a wing running eastward, measuring 54 feet, which is linked at the south gable. A further extension of 88 feet was added in the mid-17th century, followed by an additional 40 feet to create a roughly symmetrical three-storey house with a 182-foot frontage, consisting of a single pile centre and double pile ends. The centre of the north front is recessed and features octagonal stair turrets. Low two-storey L-plan wings were added at both ends in the late 17th century, bringing the total frontage to 300 feet.

Internal alterations were proposed by James Craig in 1785, and further modifications by David Hamilton in 1827, along with a scheme for additional work in 1830 that was not executed. The house was remodelled from 1869 to 1877, retaining the original harled surfaces and openings while incorporating many French architectural features. These include twin bay windows corbelled to square at the second floor with high French roofs, a double staircase, and a first-floor balcony on the south front. The large triple stairhall block has a high pavilion roof and angle turrets, while a single-storey entrance hall and porch with a balconied platform roof was added to the north front, along with tourelles at the angles of the main block. High French roofs were added over the end sections of the main block and wings, and the chimneys were rebuilt with diamond panels.

Inside, features date from various periods. The old staircase has been largely renewed in the early 21st century following fire damage. Notable interior elements include a fine baroque painted ceiling, a neo-Greek pilastered and barrel-vaulted library, and a small drawing room designed by David Hamilton in 1827. The remainder of the interior has been modified or remodelled by Wardrop.
