Description
This is a late 17th to early 18th century domestic range and courtyard, with later alterations and potentially incorporating earlier fabric. It was completely excavated and rebuilt in 2003-4 by The Pollock Hammond Partnership and has been converted into eight flatted dwellings. The building is constructed with lime harl, and the ironwork was created by Ratho Byres Forge in 2004.
The north (North Street) elevation features seven bays, grouped 6-1 with a courtyard wall to the outer right, which is chamfered at ground level. The ground floor of the six bays to the left has a window in the penultimate bay to the left and a blocked door to the outer left. The centre bays contain a door to the right and a window to the left, with two further windows to the right. There's a blocked opening in the penultimate bay to the left on the first floor; the remaining bays are regularly fenestrated. Three slate-hung, piended dormer windows sit above. A projecting bay to the right has a window to each floor, a similar dormer, and a small window to the ground on its return to the left. A blocked opening with long and short work quoins marks the courtyard wall.
The west (Scotland’s Close) elevation showcases a tall crowstepped bay in the centre with three windows to each floor and a single window to the centre at attic level. Lower bays to the right have a broad blocked doorway in the centre at ground level, flanked by windows, followed by two windows on the first floor. Further lower bays to the left of the centre feature a blocked door to the left, a blocked door to the centre, and a window to the right. A blank wall of the courtyard runs along the outer left.
The north (courtyard) elevation has a segmentally-arched carriage entrance to the centre, bearing the date '1717' and 'RG IO' on its moulded keystone, along with a two-leaf ironwork gate and a smaller pedestrian gate to the left. A single window is positioned to the right. The set-back face of the main building shows two windows to the attic of a crowstepped gable on the left; a tripartite attic window is on a further gable to the right, with both the centre link section leading fronted.
The courtyard itself is flanked by single-storey, timber-fronted ranges on the east and west sides, surrounding a circular cast-iron pan set on paved surfaces of re-used stone.
The south elevation adjoins 37-43 North Street.
Replacement timber sash and case windows have small-pane glazing patterns. The roof is covered in pantiles. Harled stacks are topped with circular clay cans. An ashlar-coped courtyard wall retains some original coping, and a decorative cast-iron hopper is positioned on the north side.
The interior reveals high-quality 18th century features, including fielded panelling, moulded cornices, decorative cast-iron fireplaces, and a keystoned, shell niche in a first-floor saloon or public room.
